Yes, it is true that it is part of the culture in the Philippines to have a festive celebration when it comes to wedding. The wedding banquet is mostly grand that it can really feed more than the whole neighborhood. Families, relatives and friends even from across the town or regions do come to celebrate. The party begins on the wedding eve, where the family of the bride and groom are preparing the food to be served. The men are butchering the cows or swine because Filipino wedding usually served roasted beef or roasted swine, actually they called "Lechon". In the Philippines, the couple used to have a long list of principal sponsors, called ninongs (for male sponsor) and ninangs (for female sponsors), they are the godparents of the couple. The couple normally has a dozen pair of godparents or even more. This sounds funny right? But Filipinos find it important.
Weddings in the Philippines are celebrated like this marriage is a serious matter that happens only once to a man and woman. Filipinos really take marriage relationship in earnest since there is no divorce in the country. Annulment is granted though the grounds are much bounded and must be proven without a doubt in court. Thus, the rate of annulment case is very low.
However, nowdays wedding celebration has evolved for practical reasons. Couples rather want to save and limit the cost so that they have a good amount of money to start their family. Although, the wedding ceremony is not compromised, and all the elements may be there like a limited number of principal sponsors and secondary sponsors such as maid of honor, bride's maids, etc.
So if you are about to marry a Filipina, you do not have to worry of impressing your bride-to-be and her family. You can discuss with her your wedding plan, and ask her opinion about it. There is nothing that a Filipino bride could not understand if you are simply open with her about things that concerns the both of you especially wedding plans.
