Hermit Crabs. It is not really a surprise that you are searching for more information on these adorable little creatures. Now, you may not be at the "adorable" point yet but believe me you will be. Because the longer you know them the cuter they get! It's probably safe to say that most of us do not know too much about hermit crabs. Therefore the thought of bringing one of them in as a pet might seem as good idea as it would have to bring in a python or tarantula as a pet.
However, I do not want you to put this cute little crab in the same category as the above two. I will not be saying anything bad about the python or tarantula but I will be saying some good things about hermit crabs. I will start off by talking about the potential he has to be an excellent pet!
It's probably a good idea to know a little bit about a pet before you bring it into your home. In fact you should probably know exactly what it is before bringing it home. So it's no different with the hermit crab. I will be explaining this little creature with some scientific terminology as well as some layman's interpretations so you can get a better understanding. Not to worry because I will explain any scientific term so you can better understand them.
When you daughter or son goes crazy over the hermit crab in the tourist shop along the coast or at your local pet store window he is looking at a terrestrial (land based) hermit crab. This crab is a part of the family of coenobitidae.
In the wild these animals are very unique. These little guys distinguish themselves from many other animals. One of the main differences is the fact that he uses his shell as his home. Another is that his life began in the ocean. They have the ability to live out of the water for several months before they will always crawl back to the shore to take a dip in the water to replenish their need.
What Does It Take To Own A Hermit Crab?
You will probably be surprised to learn that the amount of supplies and food needed is less than you think. One of the most important things to do when you are buying a hermit crab is to consider buying more than one. These guys are "social happy crabs". These little creatures are not antisocial as there name "hermit" may suggest. Once you start interacting with your new pet friends you will start to get what I mean. Therefore when you go to buy your crab make sure you keep the idea of getting more than one in mind.
Unfortunately they are not cheaper by the dozen but trust me they will be much happier when you collect them that way. I know many crab owners who do legally buy these cuties by the dozen. In their natural habitats they are much more likely to be found together than alone.
