Salad leaves are probably one of the easiest crops to grow and are especially suited to outdoor planters. Choose a fairly shallow bowl shaped container and a mix of baby leaf salad leaves. A mixture of Lollo Rossa, Red Salad Bowl, Rocket and Lambs Lettuce will give you a profusion of different attractive coloured foliage.

Peppers and Chillies make excellent patio crops, with many adopting a compact bushy habit. They also need a sunny spot to grow well. Glossy green foliage produces an abundance of shiny fruits from yellow to firery red. There are a number of dwarf varieties of French bean that can be successfully grown in outdoor planters. However, if you want a bit of architectural height and have a large enough container why not try growing runner beans. As long as you provide a good pyramid support and feed regularly you will be rewarded first with a show of attractive orange to red flowers followed by masses of delicious beans.
